June 2026

June is the run-up to 30 June, and this year there's more to act on than usual with several 1 July changes landing at once. Here's what's worth your attention before the financial year closes.

Instant asset write-off — use it before it changes

The $20,000 instant asset write-off is still available for the 2025–26 financial year, but the rules shift on 1 July.

  • Eligible small businesses (turnover under $10 million) can immediately deduct assets under $20,000

  • The asset must be first used, or installed ready for use, by 30 June 2026

  • Good news for planning ahead: the Government has proposed making the $20,000 threshold permanent from 1 July 2026, so this isn't a "use it or lose it" cliff the way it has been in past years — but nothing is locked in until it's law

Get ready for Payday Super

From 1 July 2026, employers must pay super at the same time as wages, not quarterly.

  • The final quarterly super payment under the old system is due by 28 July 2026

  • The Small Business Superannuation Clearing House (SBSCH) is closing — if you use it, you'll need to move to an alternative provider before the changeover

  • Now is the time to check your payroll software is ready and your cash flow can handle weekly or fortnightly super rather than a quarterly lump sum

Payroll and award updates

  • Review any award rates and minimum wage changes that apply from 1 July

  • Update payroll software ahead of the new financial year and run a test pay cycle in late June to confirm everything calculates correctly

  • The ATO continues to lean on Single Touch Payroll data to flag discrepancies in real time, so accuracy matters more than ever

Other things on the radar

  • All partnerships must now lodge Statements of Distribution electronically, regardless of size

  • It's a good time to review who has access to your ATO Online Services for Business and Australian Business Register accounts as a fraud-prevention check

What to focus on now

  • Bring forward any planned asset purchases if you want to use the current $20,000 write-off before 30 June

  • Get your payroll system and cash flow ready for Payday Super

  • Confirm your SBSCH alternative if you use it for employee super

  • Finalise stocktake, reconcile accounts, and tidy up records before year-end
